True, Logue put spotlight on small schools in Kansas

Two of the best small-school runners in the country made their final statements on the Kansas state championship meet.

Kyler True of Class 1A Olpe tore through the 800 (1:54.52), the 1,600 (4:07.17) and the 3,200 (9:12.51) and blew away his competition. He also anchored his team's winning 4x800 relay.

Cailie Logue of Girard blitzed through the Class 4A girls competition, winning the 800 (2:12.27), the 1,600 (5:04.31) and the 3,200 (10:28.80).

Freshman Sam Hankins of Manhattan threw 204-10 to win the 6A javelin. His earlier best of 205-11 is less than two feet from the national high school freshman class record.

Also in 6A, Christal Mosley of Wichita Southeast won an epic battle with Yazmine Wright of Hutchinson Senior in the 400 meters, 55.50 to 55.51. Mosley also won the 200 in 24.31w. Sophomore Jada Davis of Blue Valley West won the 100 in 12.31.

Hutchinson Senior won the 6A boys team title for the first time since 2004. The Junction City girls won for the first time since 1993.

Sophomore Kienna Newman helped push Junction City over the top with two wins in the hurdles finals and a leg on the winning 4x100 relay.

Emily Venters of Lawrence Free State swept the 6A 1,600 (4:59.70) and 3,200 (10:35.90).

Sophomore Maddi Righter of Olathe Northwest edged Summer Kragel of Olathe South to win the 6A girls high jump on a tiebreaker after both made 5-8. Dana Baker of Olathe North won the javelin with 149-6.

Phillip Landrum of Wichita South won the 6A 100 and 200 with wind-aided times of 10.65 and 21.73. He also anchored the winning 4x100 relay (42.21).

Kalli Anderson, a sophomore from Newton, won the Class 5A 100 meters in 12.09 seconds and anchored her team’s winning 4x100 relay (47.25). Newton smashed the all-time Kansas record in the prelims with 46.86.

Taylor Latimer swept the 5A girls throws with 44-9.50 in the shot put and 142-6 in the discus. Konner Swenson of Maize pulled off the same double on the boys side, with 56-9 and 174-3.

Noah Green and Alex Gill helped lead St. Thomas Aquinas to the 5A team title. Green swept the hurdles events (13.90/37.15) and Gill won the 1,600 (4:22.94).

Markalyn Eatmon from Liberal went 23-4.50 to win the 5A boys long jump. Matt Pile from Eisenhower-Goddard threw 199-11 to win the javelin.

Teammates Clifford Robinson and Anthony Gould of Leavenworth went 1-2 in the 100 meters and were part of the winning 4x100 relay (41.73). Robinson also won the 200.

Sophomore Jordan Hawkins of Buhler won the Class 4A boys 100 (10.67w) and the 200 (22.17w). Ethan Kossover of Maize South won the distance races and Carter Blackburn of Holcomb swept the hurdles. Leeroi Johnson of Tonganoxie won the discus with 180-3 and Peyton Lane of Clay Center Community went 15-6 to claim the pole vault.

Jewell Bolden of Andover Central brought her state meet haul to seven career titles with Class 4A wins in the long jump (18-7) and the 100 hurdles (14.27w).

In Class 3A, Kaden Davis from Ellsworth won the 200 and the 400 titles. Shae Ware from Sedgwick doubled in the 100 and 200 and Wellsville's Paige McDaniel won the 400 and 800. Kourni Hubert from Beloit threw 147-10 to win the javelin.

Jerrod Hoover of Washington County won the Class 2A javelin (184-4) and also the high jump (6-6). Kaden Meitler from Smith Center won the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and pole vault (14-0).

Skyler Saunders of Valley Heights won the high jump with 5-8.50. Teammate Kayla Smith won the long jump and the triple jump.

Halle Johnson from Bennington won the 800/1,600/3,200 triple in Class 2A. Brooke Browlee from Maranatha Academy won the 100, 200 and anchored the winning 4x100 relay.

Junior Lane Peters of Pike Valley swept the Class 1A 100 (10.77w) and 200 (22.21w). Raelee Ibarra did the same for the girls, running 12.37 and 25.72.
