Mosley Closes High School Career With More Golds

Already one of the fastest sprinters in Kansas high school history, Christal Mosely added to her legacy at the Kansas state track and field championships at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium.

The Wichita Southeast senior broke the 400 meters meet record of 54.40 from 1980, as she clocked 54.16 in the prelims on Friday. Saturday she won the Class 6A title in 56.07. She added a state title in the 200 (24.63) ad ran anchor on the winning 4x400 relay (4:00.38). 

“I’m really just overwhelmed with joy,” Mosley said in an interview with the Wichita Eagle. “I did what I came here to do and I succeeded. It makes me excited about what I can do next.” 

Mosley won five state titles and earlier this season broke the all-time Kansas best in the 200 with 23.80.

Shawnee Mission Northwest senior Molly Born won the 6A 1,600 (4:54.57) and 3,200 (10:28.80). 

Olathe North senior Dana Baker set a state meet record in the javelin, winning the 6A title with a throw of 168-8. 

Hutchinson sophomore Tayezhan Crough won the 6A boys 110 hurdles (14.45) and 300 hurdles (38.66). 

In 5A action, Leavenworth senior Aarika Lister won the 100 in a meet record-setting performance, clocking 11.64. 

Senior McKenzie Wilks of Pittsburg swept the 5A distance events, winning the 800 (2:14.04), setting a meet record in the 1,600 (4:56.29) and capturing the 3,200 title (10:50.19). 

The Lenexa-St. James Academy girls 4x400 relay set a 5A meet record, running  3:56.56. The previous record of 3:57 stood since 1980. Lenexa-St. James also set a 4x8 record (9:19.6). Sophomore Katharine Moore ran anchor on both relays.   

Senior Joseph Holthusen of Wichita-Carroll won the 5A 110 (14.55) and 300 hurdles (38.42).          

Shawnee Heights senior Michael Hoffer won the 5A high jump (6-10) and long jump (23-4.75).     

McPherson senior Elle Barrett set a 4A meet record in the triple jump, leaping 39-11.5. She also added a title in the long jump (18-1.50). 

Chapman freshman Taylor Briggs claimed the 4A 1,600 (5:09.06) and 3,200 (11:03.78) and was anchor on the winning 4x800 (9:42.21). 

Smoke Valley junior Tim Lambert set a 4A meet record in the 200 prelims clocking 21.76. He won the 100 (10.82) and won the 200, running 22.11 in the finals. In the 300 hurdles, his perlim time of 37.85 was a meet record as well. He won the event in 37.95.

Senior Lakelin Conrad of Collegiate won the 4A 1,600 (4:20.13) and 3,200 (9:35.15). 

Junior Layne Needham of Cheney claimed the 3A 100 (15.34) and 300 hurdles (45.68). 

Sterling junior Grace Rowland claimed the 3A long jump (16-11.5) and triple jump (36-10.75). 

Sydney Johnson of Beloit, a senior, claimed the 3A shot put (41-9.5) and discus (151-8). 

In 2A, Jamya O’Quinn, a junior from Moundridge won the 100 (12.42) and 200 (25.99) and ran on the winning 4x100 relay (50.62). 

Devin Berens of Stanton County claimed the 2A boys 100 (10.93) and 200 (22.42) and was part of the first place 4x100 relay (43.67). 

Junior Hadley Splechter of Yale Center pulled of the distance triple, winning the 2A 800 (1:58.36), 1,600 (4:28.33) and 3,200 (9:36). He was also part of the gold winning 4x800 (8:19.09). 

In the 2A throws, Hillsboro junior Wes Shaw set a meet record in the shot put (60-11.5) and Marion senior Tyler Palic threw a discus record (182-6).   

Afftin Conway of Osborne claimed the 1A girls 100 (12.41) and 300 hurdles (44.86) titles. 

Madison Lueger of Centralia set a 1A meet record in the javelin, throwing 144-2. 

Senior Lane Peters of Scandia-Pike won the 1A boys 100 (11.06) and 200 (22.66). 

Beloit-St. Johns senior David Lutgen won the 1A boys 1,600 (4:28.25) and 3,200 (9:28.98). 

Osborne sophomore Darrien Holloway claimed the 1A 110 hurdles (14.78) and 300 (40.60) hurdles.
